The award comes on the eve of 2027, the year in which the Family celebrates 125 years since its founding and 30 years of the fourth generation at the helm. Tre Bicchieri for the Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG Riserva Ca’ Florian 2018
Tommasi Family Estates has been named Winery of the Year by Gambero Rosso’s Vini d’Italia 2027 Guide, one of the most authoritative accolades in the Italian wine world. The award ceremony will take place on Sunday 25 October in Rome, at La Nuvola, during the official presentation of the Guide.
Gambero Rosso’s citation reads:
“This family boasts 125 years of winemaking tradition, and the fourth generation is carrying the company forward with extraordinary enthusiasm. The Tommasis are among the finest interpreters of Valpolicella, yet they have had the courage and foresight to invest in no fewer than seven regions, in Italy’s finest terroirs – from Oltrepò to Collio in Friuli, from Montalcino to Maremma Toscana and Umbria, from Puglia to Basilicata and all the way to Etna – creating a group of international standing.”
Representing the award is the Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Ca’ Florian 2018, awarded Tre Bicchieri. Produced from the vineyard of the same name, Ca’ Florian is the highest expression of Tommasi’s vision for Amarone: elegance, depth and the ability to evolve over time.
«Being named Winery of the Year fills us with great pride and deep gratitude – says Pierangelo Tommasi, Chief Executive Officer – This award does not celebrate a single wine or a single territory, but a journey built over time, across generations, through the work of our entire Family and of the people who share this story with us every day. The fact that it comes on the eve of our 125th anniversary makes it all the more special: we dedicate it to those who came before us, to our Valpolicella and to the fifth generation, who are already looking to the future».
The Family is already looking ahead to the years to come. At the heart of its vision is a commitment to sustainability across vineyards and wineries, with certification processes already under way; hospitality, with Villa Quaranta Tommasi Wine Resort & Thermal SPA and the Tommasi Wine Hospitality experiences, which welcome around 10,000 visitors each year across the group’s territories; and a wine culture founded on quality and awareness.
Today Tommasi Family Estates is led by nine family members and spans 957 hectares of vineyards across eight Italian regions. Alongside the historic winery in Valpolicella Classica, the group comprises Le Fornaci in Lugana, Tenuta di Caseo in Oltrepò Pavese, Casisano in Montalcino, Poggio al Tufo in the Tuscan Maremma and Umbria, Masseria Surani in Puglia, Paternoster in the Vulture area of Basilicata and Ammura on Etna, as well as the partnership in Collio with Marco Felluga – Russiz Superiore. With an output of around 5 million bottles, a turnover of approximately €35 million and an export share of 85%, Tommasi is today one of the most recognised ambassadors of Italian wine worldwide.
From the family cellar comes a collector’s box set featuring three vintages of Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, alongside a special edition of the 2017 vintage inspired by the world of music. Two projects, one shared belief: the greatness of Amarone is measured over time.
Few wines in the world can stand the test of time like Amarone. It is from this awareness that the two projects through which Tommasi Family Estates, established for four generations in the heart of Valpolicella Classica, pays tribute to its flagship wine were born: the Family Library, a collector’s box bringing together three vintages of Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG preserved in the family cellar, and the Tommasi Amarone 2017 Special Edition, a limited release celebrating the first decade of a classic through an unexpected language: music.
“Amarone is the wine that represents Valpolicella around the world and carries with it a responsibility: to demonstrate that its greatness is measured over time,”says Giancarlo Tommasi, Technical Director and Chief Winemaker of the group.“Opening our cellar and presenting vintages that have had time to evolve means affirming a principle our family has believed in for more than a century: a great wine should not be judged only when it is released, but by its ability to transform while remaining true to itself. These bottles are the most authentic proof of the quality of our wines, the work carried out in the vineyard, and the dedication that Amarone requires in the cellar. With the Family Library and the Special Edition, we want to share this heritage and tell its story to a new audience.
“FAMILY LIBRARY: A DECADE OF AMARONE THROUGH THREE VINTAGES The Family Library tells the story of Amarone as a family story is told: chapter by chapter. The collector’s box designed for wine lovers brings together three vintages released five years apart, 2012, 2017 and 2022, in a vertical tasting journey spanning an entire decade, allowing enthusiasts to appreciate how the same wine, born from the same vineyards, evolves over time. The 2022 vintage appears as a preview, portraying a young Amarone that retains all the energy of its fruit. The 2017 vintage represents the moment of full maturity, while the 2012 vintage reveals the depth and complexity that only extended bottle ageing can deliver. The Family Library will be available to wine lovers from October 2026 in a limited edition of 100 sets. For restaurants and wine merchants, Tommasi has created a dedicated version that looks even further back in time: 2009, 2012 and 2017. Three vintages that allow sommeliers and wine professionals to offer their guests a rare tasting experience that is increasingly difficult to recreate outside the winery where the wines were produced.
AMARONE 2017 SPECIAL EDITION: A CLASSIC, TEN YEARS IN THE MAKING Alongside the Family Library, the 2017 vintage returns in a special guise. Some wines behave like great songs: they travel through the years, mature and reveal new nuances with every listen. From this idea comes the Tommasi Amarone 2017 Special Edition, a project paying tribute to the first decade of Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG 2017. The claim “A Classic, Ten Years in the Making” captures its spirit perfectly: like great songs, great wines evolve through the years and reveal new nuances every time they are revisited. The contemporary gift box, inspired by the aesthetics of music platforms, includes a postcard telling the story of the vintage, suggesting food pairings and presenting the winemaker’s tasting notes.
“The 2017 vintage,” continues Giancarlo Tommasi,“is now experiencing a moment of full expression: the fruit has evolved into deeper notes, the structure has become elegant and the tannins velvety. This is why we invite wine lovers to rediscover it not only through taste, but also through fresh eyes and ears.”
A QR code leads to an original Spotify playlist, curated by Matilde Davoli for Sudestudio. The tracks, released between 2017 and today and arranged in chronological order, were selected to reflect the defining traits of this Amarone: warm and elegant sensory appeal, strong personality and sophistication. They accompany the tasting experience through four moments: Opening, Tasting, Sharing and Celebrating.
The journey begins with “Motion Sickness” by Phoebe Bridgers, released in 2017, and spans a decade of influences ranging from pop and electronic music to indie sounds, featuring artists such as Jungle, Jessie Ware, Little Simz, David Byrne and The Strokes. Two tracks bear the signature of the studio itself: “Gallipoli” by Beirut and “Calma Cara” by Selton, both recorded at Sudestudio.
Two exclusive reinterpretations of the iconic Tommasi Amarone label, together with the opportunity to personalise the bottle with a name, make each bottle a unique collector’s item, perfect as a gift or keepsake. The Special Edition will be released in a limited run of 1,000 bottles, available from October 2026 while stocks last through leading wine merchants, the Tommasi wine shop and tommasiwinehospitality.com.
