24 medal winners at the Chablis Wine Competition

At the 32nd edition of the Chablis Wine Competition in January, 24 wines won medals, across the four appellations of Petit Chablis, Chablis, Chablis Premier Cru, and Chablis Grand Cru.
This competition is unique in that winegrowers do not participate in the judging, in order to guarantee total objectivity. The 86 jurors from this edition, under the presidency of German journalist Stefanie Köhler, include journalists, restaurateurs, sommeliers, traders, and amateur wine buffs.

The wine is judged in two phases. The wines are first tasted by the entire jury. Those samples that obtain the best notes then go before a super-jury which alone awards the medals; gold, silver, and bronze.

The medal-winning wines are used by the Chablis arm of the BIVB during operations in France and abroad, and act as ambassadors for Chablis wines for the period of one year.

Some 272 samples are presented, with Petit Chablis, Chablis, and Chablis Premier Cru wines from the 2016 vintage and Chablis Grand Cru wines from 2015, representing 69 cellars, estates, and négociants.53

Ca’ de’ Rocchi “Istà” becomes 100% Pinot Grigio delle Venezie

Tinazzi celebrates the creation of the new DOC appellation Pinot Grigio delle Venezie by changing the grape varieties of “Ca’ de’ Rocchi – Istà”, which now becomes 100% Pinot Grigio delle Venezie, accordingly with the guidelines of the newly created appellation.

The new DOC appellation brings together the Pinot Grigio producers of three major wine regions, Veneto, Trentino, and Friuli Venezia Giulia, and it aims at improving the quality of Pinot Grigio by decreasing the allowed production per hectare and bringing more value to the final product, which will be labelled as Pinot Grigio DOC delle Venezie.

As a result, “Ca’ de’ Rocchi – Istà” becomes 100% Pinot Grigio delle Venezie DOP, changing its style, while keeping its traditional freshness and balance between fruit and minerality.

Magister by Cantina di Nizza

In October 1955 in Nizza Monferrato, someone realised that gathering together all the farmers who had worked their vineyards for so long alone, might lead to something completely new.

The production of quality wine starts in the vineyards of which there are 550 hectares of vine, treated with the care and respect they deserve. Cantina di Nizza Monferrato’s aim has been carrying over to our present the tradition and the secrets of the ancient way of “wine-making”. This was possible just by unravelling the secrets and techniques of wine-making to hand down these methods and improve them with the help of the technology and new enological knowledge.

We tasted: Magister “BARBERA D’ASTI SUPERIORE” D.O.C.G.. Cantina di Nizza

This Barbera result of selection grapes, is matured for 6 months in large oak barrels. The wine has a ruby red color and very vinous aroma as its main feature. I veroni, Chianti Rufina Riserva Quona

The name I Veroni is derived from the wide terraces surrounding the farm where many years ago tobacco leaf and grain from the Arno valley was dried.  For some time, Lorenzo Mariani, the dedicated winemaker of the I Veroni vineyard in Chianti Rufina, near Florence, had been thinking about developing his wines and giving them new impetus. The new labels were presented for the two most famous wines of the farm, Chianti Rufina and Chianti Rufina Reserve. Both wines are now produced exclusively from the grapes of a single vineyard and are named after the origin.

Today the farm which lies in the Pontassieve Hills (240-280 meters), spreads over 50 hectares and is close to the church of S.Martino a Quona. The vineyards cover 15 hectares and 20 hectares are planted with olives.

I Veroni now has a dynamic range of 3 distinct Chianti Rufina wines which are true to the authentic character of the Sangiovese- Rufina tradition and 4 IGT wines : two red wines , a Rose’ and White blend .

We tasted: Chianti Rufina Riserva Quona 2014 DOCG

I Veroni Chianti Rufina Reserve is produced with a long fermentation with only selected Sangiovese , this wine is aged in French oak barrels of 500 litres for 16-18 months before being bottled and stored for a further period of 8-10 months.

On the nose has hints of black fruits, ripe red fruit, spicy aromas, notes of tobacco and a limited presence of oak. The palate is full and velvety, with a well-integrated tannic component, long in the finish. Ideal in paring with pasta and risotto with meat sauces, red meat and seasoned cheese.

Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Silvio Nardi

We are in the picturesque town of Montalcino which still preserves its charm as an ancient medieval village. At the beginning of the 20th century, Montalcino was no more than a tranquil village of the Tuscan countryside: a few houses, shops and vineyards. The terrains of the Tenute Silvio Nardi have shared in the history this area.

The Tenuta is composed by Two estates, two slopes, West and East eight plots, several terroirs…
The finesse and identity that Sangiovese grosso expresses in each vineyard of the two estates, so different in their soils and climates, are undeniable.

Manachiara, exposed to the east where sun rises, offers full bodied and powerful wines.
Casale del Bosco, in the west side where sun goes down, offers elegant and complex wines.

We tasted: Brunello di Montalcino 2012

This Brunello composed of 100% Sangiovese is characterized by a ruby red color with garnet highlights. The nose opens with an intense and complex bouquet, with hints of berries, anise  enriched with pleasant spicy notes and delicate hints of vanilla. On the palate it is pleasantly warm, with soft tannins. The wine has a great structure, with a notable persistence.

Perfect to accompany roasts and game, it is ideal paired with aged cheeses.

San Leonardo 2011

The Tenuta San Leonardo was formerly a monastery and for over 3 centuries has served as the residence of the Marquis Guerrieri Gonzaga family, its proud custodians. Today, the San Leonardo estate is a garden of vineyards and roses, protected by the massive barrier of the Alps, which blunt the force of the cold northern winds, while the valley floor benefits from, and in turn releases, warmth from nearby Lake Garda. The Tenuta remains an ancient world, in which winemaking practices, still uncompromisingly artisanal, yield wines that are true gems of Italy’s wine tradition, marked by freshness, harmony, and an innate elegance.  Inside the ancient walls of the Estate San Leonardo have always cultivated the international varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. In the north region however, they cultivate the Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling.

The vineyards are approximately 30 hectares in total, sited at a relatively low elevation of 150 metres. All of the vineyards are in well-drained, nutrient-poor soils that yield grapes whose wines boast levels of anthocyanins that are unusually high, and not just for Trentino.

We tasted: San Leonardo 2011

This is a legendary wine, one of the most famous and award-winning Italian reds, the San Leonardo represents the magical result of a tradition that is defined in all over the world as a “bordeaux blending” bringing together the colours, aromas and savours of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère and Merlot aged in small oak barrels.

It is a ruby red wine, light garnet toenail. Elegant and delicate aroma, it is expressed on cherry and plum notes, dark spices and tobacco. In the mouth has a splendid entrance, intense. The twisting tannins accompany a sapid background and contrast the generous softness, directing a taste of spectacular breadth and taste, as only the great reds can make.

In the food pairing is ideal with game, roasted duck, lamb also with aged cheeses from cow’s milk. For the dessert cheese/vanilla soufflé, snails, truffles and dark chocolate.
